62 Orchids: Black Mountain

In the reserve of Black Mountain in the centre of Canberra's city,  62 species of native orchid are currently known to grow. The delicate complexity of the orchid flower led me to approach their representation in a way that might capture this detail. Botanical drawings, such as those made by Ferdinand Bauer early in the nineteenth century, use a varying weight of line. To achieve such a line, I incised the surface of the wheel-thrown porcelain using fine blades and then inlaid with ceramic ink. Glaze on the inside of each vessel hints at the individual orchid colour.
